Pupils and staff at Seal Church of England Primary School near Sevenoaks welcomed the arrival of their first lambs, marking the beginning of spring. The first set of adorable lambs were born at the school’s thriving community farm, nestled in the school grounds.
As one of the few primary schools in Kent that offers a tailored farm curriculum, Seal Primary School Farm provides year-round outdoor learning experiences for its students. This hands-on educational approach fosters essential life skills in children, emphasising the importance of real-world learning through animal care, problem-solving, critical thinking, and environmental stewardship. Not every child wants to sit inside at a desk all day, and this multifaceted education experience can enrich their learning experience and promote well-being.
Seal CofE Primary is part of the Inspire Academy Movement, an innovative group of schools in Kent. Liz Mitchell, the Farm’s founder and CEO of the Trust, stated: “We have been running a farm at Seal Primary for six years, and each year, we see the personal connection our students develop with the Farm. They genuinely enjoy their sessions here, benefiting from invaluable outdoor learning opportunities that will resonate with them throughout their lives.”
Liz continued: “This year, we have split the lambing season, so another batch of lambs will arrive in June. We do this for our children, as there is nothing quite like the excitement of newborn lambs, especially when they are right on your doorstep!”
The Farm is home to a diverse range of animals, including four hives of bees, ducks, goats, pigs, sheep, guinea pigs, chickens, and tortoises. Many animals are used for therapy purposes, and the farm team is currently training one of the micropigs to become a therapy pig.
Open days are held throughout the year. Full details on how to purchase tickets can be found at Events | Seal Community Farm.
