New project to improve pig welfare
Animal welfare scientists are helping Sainsbury’s identify ‘good mums’ for free farrowing systems on their pig farms. It is hoped the results will encourage more of their farmers to switch to higher welfare systems where the pregnant sow can be kept loose during and after the birth of her piglets.
Soil Association Awards deadline extended
The Soil Association has announced that the deadline for their Innovation Awards has been extended until Tuesday 26th August. Now in their second year, the awards showcase the most innovative approaches to sustainable, low-impact farming and growing.
Insect populations impacted by climate change
The appearance of new insect species, particularly grasshoppers and crickets, on the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust’s (GWCT) Allerton Project research farm in Leicestershire indicates that climate change is having an impact on wildlife.
