Following nearly 10 years’ development and refinement, Big Bale South, who also prepare Massey Ferguson balers imported from America for sale or hire, will soon be rolling out its Big Bale Transtacker and building work has begun on a workshop unit which will be used to construct this new automatic bale stacker.

Due to be completed at the end of December 2018, the 1,000 square metre, six-bay workshop facility in Waltham Chase, Hampshire has been carefully designed, manufactured, and constructed by Scorpion Buildings to meet Michael’s exact requirements.

“Primarily we needed to ensure that there was ample space in each bay for the Transtackers to be built,” said Matt Wickham at Scorpion Buildings. “At 8.6 meters the bays are larger than normal and, as each will be used as an individual workshop for these enormous bale handlers, we have incorporated individual personnel doors and six-meter high roller shutter doors.”

Additionally, the workshop will be insulated with composite panelling to provide a thermal rating and, due to the nature of work to be completed by Big Bale South, Scorpion has also adapted the frame with reinforced steels and runners to allow the installation of a five-tonne gantry crane.
“The beauty of working with Scorpion is our ability to respond quickly to client demand through our own CE certificated steel fabrication unit, Core Steel, based in Hereford,” said Matt. “We can design to our customers’ specific needs and requirements, and can offer very rapid turn-around. When it came to working with Big Bale South we simply factored the load of the crane into the design and the structural detail.”

Further expansion

Having previously worked with D&D Construction (a historic branch of Scorpion) for almost 15 years, Michael Coleman has also appointed Scorpion to construct a new building at his 19-acre industrial park, The Vinery, in Arundel, West Sussex.
“I took over an ex-mushroom farm in November 2003 and converted the site into industrial rental units,” said Michael Coleman, owner of Big Bale South and Vinery Management. “The way it has developed has been amazing and with our 60 plus units at 100% occupancy we are looking to expand further.”

The project at The Vinery, due to commence in January 2019, will include the construction of a 1,000 square meter light industrial rental unit.

“The building will have eight bays and offer maximum flexibility to be partitioned off in various configurations depending on occupant demand,” said Matt. “A lot of Michael’s tenants are smaller sized businesses, classic car renovators, antique furniture restorers, microbreweries, and the like. The layout will ensure the best flexibility of space, and therefore open the units up to the widest range of occupants looking for this type of space.”

While the development at The Vinery is not scheduled for completion until early Spring 2019 there has already been a lot of interest in the units and looking to the future Michael will be looking to expand the site to meet tenant demand.
