“Cereal yields were good and with the hot, dry weather an extraordinary 4,000 tonnes of grain was being moved into the store per day, leaving us an unprecedented 70% full by the 10 August,” said John Smith, Weald Granary’s managing director. “Then, after several deluges, the store was able to handle some quite damp grain from members understandably keen to crack on with fit crops.”
A story of the harvest has been variable milling wheat proteins and malting barley quality. “With the co-operative storage system members with lower quality can still gain access to premium markets without overwhelming fall backs or rejections – while those sending in top quality grain can benefit over and above the full premiums,” Mr Smith added.
